"Breathe" offers a work of fiction in which Reece seeks to interweave elements of supernatural happenings and suspense into a descriptive narrative. Although the main character, Eric, is a vampire, the manuscript is not completely dedicated to that plot. Four main characters, including Eric, are introduced with "plot building, sub-stories" of their own.

As the first story, "In Life or Death", unfolds, Eric is introduced as a firefighter preparing to leave the Midwest for a vacation in New Orleans. It is there that he discovers a race of beings thought only to exist in folklore. He has been chosen to lead them.

The second story, "The Worst in Life", describes Kyle as a troubled new army recruit, not caring about himself, or his fellow infantryman. With the advent of an invasion by his unit, down to Honduras, Kyle realizes how much he cares for life, only to be stopped short of enjoying it.

In "Life Guard", the third story, Brad, is briefly mentioned as an ex-cop, now working as a frustrated security guard. The short story introduces his character only for further mention in the manuscript.

"The Branches of Life" follows, introducing Tim, into the storyline. Tim is a well to do college student with a pull towards Paganism. This pull becomes increasingly stronger as Tim becomes more focused on his destiny; A destiny that could decide the fate of the world.

The final story, "Life Lines", reintroduces the other characters, Eric, Kyle, Brad, and Tim, while they come to grips with what seems to be a battle of the supernatural. With a plot twist near the end of the manuscript, the door is left wide open for a part two of "Breathe", which will be titled "Exhalation", in the near future.

In "Breathe", Reece tries to frame his chronicle with descriptions of the characters' inner thoughts and emotions, and with depictions of settings, supporting characters, and events.
